Identify the source of the water

When it wasn’t the elements, it is probably a leaky faucet or pipes. Identify where the water is coming from to fix it or cut it off. Even catching the water in a bucket can help until the professionals get there.

Remove the water

Depending on the amount of water, you may want to use a mop, towels, fans or dehumidifiers. This is not as affective as what a professional would have, but it will do the trick. Just make sure that all of the water has somewhere to go. If you are using fans or dehumidifiers, open the windows. Mop buckets should be emptied outside the house if you are not sure which pipes are leaking.

Call in the professional

It is important that you call a professional restoration company in this situation. Depending on how long the water has been there, mildew, mold and other bacterias could have started growing. Get them to evaluate the damage and give you an estimate. This is also useful for your home insurance claim, in the event you wish to claim the damage.

What to do while waiting for the water restoration company
In the event that your entire home is flooded, turn off the main power supply to avoid short circuiting. Next, move all valuables and other fragiles to a safe, dry space. If you have cabinets or china cupboards in your home, be sure to empty the as well. The wood will absorb the water and ruin you belongings. You should also think about moving your furinature out of the home to prevent mildew formation and to give the restoration company space to work. In the event your carpet has been soaked, wait for the restoartion company to come. The carpet is far too heavy to move on your own when it is full of water.

Look out for mold and mildew growth
As we have mentioned before, mold and mildew grow in wet environments. Once you have dried the affected area, check for growth, You will see green, white or brown spots on anything such as furniture  walls and floors. anything porous will have absorbed the water and made a nice home for mold. If any mold or mildew has been identified, be sure to call a professional as soon as possible.

Water damage can be devastating, but when found quickly, and acting accordingly, it can be an unpleasant experience as opposed to a disastrous one.
